Historically, Grape Arbor has operated two types of programs:


After School -- 21st Century Community Learning Centers

21st Century logoWho Can Attend? This program is for middle school students who:

  1. Need help with gaining skills to pass the reading/language arts or mathematics End-of-Grade (EOG) tests;

 

  1. Want to improve performance in reading/language arts or mathematics; and

 

  1. Enjoy cultural enrichment activities such as music, drama, dance, and crafts.

The program emphasizes the strengths and interests of students by fostering a caring and engaging learning environment.

 

What Are the Activities? The program operates with the cross-cultural theme of “Traveling the Americas: North, Central, and South.” The curriculum is aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and explores the culture of a new country every week. On a daily basis, students participate in:

  1. Homework Support: Individualized tutorial assistance or computer time to complete school assignments

 

  1. Academic Enrichment: Active, fun-filled activities that expand students’ learning in core subject areas (Each week, there are two days each of reading/language arts and mathematics.)

 

  1. Cultural Enrichment: Music, drama, dance, crafts, or movement to engage students’ creativity and personal expression

For optimal benefit, students are expected to attend at least 3 days per week.

 

When and Where Are the Services Offered? Grape Arbor’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers operate on the traditional academic calendars of Chapel-Hill Carrboro City Schools (CHCCS) and Orange County Schools (OCS).

Who Provides Transportation? The Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA provides bus transportation from each of the CHCCS middle schools to the Grape Arbor Site. OCS provides a bus to transport students from Stanback Middle School to the Stanford Site. Students at Gravelly Hill Middle School and Stanford Middle School simply remain after school for the program. Students at all sites must be picked up by parents/guardians.

 

What Does the Program Cost? The program is free to all students.

 

The 21st Century Community Learning Centers for Middle School Students are a collaboration by:

Past Summer Programs...

 

Traveling the Americas,Particularly North Carolina (2010)

boy with board memberDuring the 6-week session, students learned about the peoples, cultures, and languages of four countries from North America, Central America, and South America. They compared those countries to the regions of North Carolina. They read stories, poetry, and books about the selected countries; they went on field trips to areas within the central parts of North Carolina that have characteristics similar to the countries they studied.

Traveling the Americas, and Particularly North Carolina (2009)

The “Traveling the Americas” Program introduced students to the peoples, cultures, and languages of thecountries that make up North America, Central America, and South America. It provided an in-depth exploration of four countries (e.g., Costa Rica, Jamaica, Brazil, and Chile)within the Americas, with a comparison to the regions of North Carolina. Students read stories, poetry, and books about the selected countries; they performed mathematical calculations based on the currencies and economic conditions of the countries; and they learned dances, music, and crafts that are performed by the peoples of the subject countries.

 

Activities were offered according to the following daily schedule:

 

9:00 – 10:00 a.m.
  Reading, Folk Tales, Poetry, and Writing
10:00 – 10:15 a.m.
  Snack
10:15 – 11:00 a.m.
  Mathematics, Computer Literacy
11:00 – 12:00 noon
  Dance, Music, Arts, Crafts

The program operated for a total of 20 days at Grape Arbor’s Youth Enhancement Center at 1717 Legion Road, Suite G-101, in Chapel Hill. Funding was provided by Strowd Roses Foundation and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

 

Reach for the Stars Summer Program (2005 - 2008)

In cooperation with the Orange County Family Resource Centers, Grape Arbor provided a four-week summer program for youth in grades K-5 that focused on reading, mathematics, computer literacy, and science. This summer enrichment program was funded by Strowd Roses Foundation, SunTrust Bank, and individual donors.
